June 13, 2019
On June 11, 2019 Cape Elizabeth voters approved the $26.9 million FY20 school budget by a vote of 417 to 207. I would like to thank all those citizens who voted and who participated in the budget process.
At the start of the FY20 budget development process the Cape Elizabeth School Board identified three goals for their work:
- Maintaining and improving the high quality of education for each student.
- Careful examination of line items and consideration of the success and effectiveness of expenditures in order to provide a fiscally responsible budget.
- Clear and continual communication throughout the budget process.
In an effort to work collaboratively and increase communication, Town Councilors and School Board members attended two joint meetings before the start of the budget development process to plan a more collaborative process. As a result of those meetings, a sub-committee was formed to promote communication between the Town Council and the School Board. This sub-committee consists of the Town Manager, the Superintendent of Schools, the Business Managers of both the town and school, and the Finance Chairs of both the town and school. This subcommittee met throughout the budget development process and plans to continue meeting throughout the year.
Now that the FY20 School Budget has passed we can move forward with plans for the 2019-2020 school year. Architects and engineers from Colby Company, Inc. and Scott Simons Architects have begun interviews with school staff and administrators as they begin plans to conduct the facilities needs assessment. These plans will also include meeting with community members at some point during the process.
In anticipation and preparation of the 2019-2020 school year, we can begin hiring for the new positions provided in the budget, administrators will be ordering supplies, and principals can finalize schedules which are impacted by these new positions. Teachers are planning their collaborative curriculum work for the summer, and many are taking courses and/or participating in professional development in order to strengthen their craft. Again, a huge thank you for those who participated in the FY20 School Budget process and to those who supported the FY20 school budget. We are looking forward to a great school year!
